The M.A. (Urdu) (One Year) is a postgraduate programme designed in accordance with the provisions of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the UGC Curriculum and Credit Framework for Postgraduate Programmes, and the National Credit Framework (NCrF). The programme is intended for learners who have successfully completed a Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) or its equivalent in any Discipline and wish to pursue study in Urdu language and literature through the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode.

The programme comprises 40 credits and offers two academic pathways: Honours with Research and Honours without Research, with distinct programme structures aligned with the nature of the learner’s undergraduate qualification. The Honours with Research pathway provides the study of Urdu Ghazal, Urdu Nazm, Special Study of Women Writers in Urdu, Fiction and Non-fiction Urdu Literature, and Urdu Criticism, along with specialised elective courses on literary personalities and skill. The Honours without Research pathway provides study of Urdu Ghazal, Fiction and Non-fiction Urdu Literature, Urdu literary criticism and Research Methodology, along with a 12-credit Dissertation and specialised elective courses on literary personalities and skill.

The elective component in both pathways requires learners to select one course from Group-I and one course from Group-II, with each selected elective carrying 4 credits. The elective courses provide opportunities for specialised study in areas including Poetry, fiction, non-fiction, major literary personalities, Urdu mass media and translation.

The programme is open to learners who have completed a Four-Year Bachelor’s Degree or its equivalent from any academic discipline, subject to the applicable pathway-specific eligibility requirements. Learners must possess adequate proficiency in reading and writing Urdu at the postgraduate level. This provision enables learners from diverse academic backgrounds to pursue postgraduate study in Urdu while ensuring the requisite language competence to engage effectively with postgraduate-level Urdu courses.

Programme Objectives

The programme aims to:

1. Develop an advanced understanding of Urdu language, literature and literary traditions.
2. Provide in-depth knowledge of major areas and genres of Urdu literary studies, including Ghazal, Nazm, Classical Urdu Poetry and Literary Criticism.
3. Develop critical and analytical abilities for the interpretation and evaluation of Urdu literary texts.
4. Introduce learners to the literary contributions of prominent poets, writers and women authors.
5. Provide opportunities for specialised study through elective courses in fiction, non-fiction, literary personalities, mass media and translation.
6. Develop academic, communication, analytical and interpretative skills relevant to higher studies and professional contexts.
7. Develop research aptitude and academic skills and enable learners to undertake independent and systematic academic work, including Dissertation-based research were prescribed under the respective programme structure.
8. Encourage learners to engage with Urdu literature from historical, literary and contemporary perspectives.
9. Promote an understanding of Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) as reflected in Urdu literary and cultural traditions and explore their intellectual, social and cultural dimensions.
10. Enable learners to critically engage with the contribution of Urdu literature to the preservation, transmission and enrichment of India’s diverse knowledge, cultural and literary heritage.
